How long does it take for plaster to dry?

The skimming process takes between two and a half hours to five hours from mixing it up in the bucket to the very last trowel down. This will depend on the room/ building size, temperature and air circulation within the building. However it will need further time to dry properly before painting to ensure that the painters finish is on the best possible background, again this depends on the temperature and air circulation of the building or room. It can take anywhere from one to five days to properly dry, you will know it is dry and ready to paint over as it will turn a light creamy pink colour as opposed to its darker colour when first applied.

How to plaster over artex?

Firstly, if the walls are old then it’s worth checking if they contain any asbestos. Once you know if they are free from this then you can simply remove it by carefully scraping the nipples and dimples with a knife or spatula. Then be sure to thoroughly clean up any mess as these bits will go everywhere. Then apply a bonding coat to the wall because a skim coat is only 3mm thick and will not be enough. Once the coat is dry, you then apply PVA to reduce suction when skimming the top coat. This should leave you with that desired smooth finish.
